There are three main types short term rental hosts, find out which Airbnb host you are.
The Opportunist
The Opportunist is an Airbnb host who is willing to rent out available space from their current residence for premium or only when they know they’re not utilizing the space. They usually have a very specific time window in mind that they’re willing to rent out their unit.
Maybe they noticed that a major upcoming convention in their area has all the hotels booked out or they know they will be out for a couple of weeks. Either way, they just want to see if they could make some extra cash for a very specific time window. They’d rather not put in the work and effort required for successful continuous listing of their unit.
The Stable Extra Income Seeker
The Stable Extra Income Seeker is an Airbnb host who wants to achieve a consistent, recurring stream of extra income from their unit by renting it out on a regular, but still not full-time basis. Maybe they want to rent out 2 weekends every month or two months every summer.
And if an opportunity comes that allows them to rent their unit for a premium, you can be sure that they will take advantage of that as well. Maximizing the profit potential of the unit is usually the goal, even if it takes up more of their time.
The Full-Time Rentrepreneur
The Full-Time Rentrepreneur is an Airbnb host who is renting at least one dedicated, full-time short term rental. This is someone who seeks to ultimately have rental income from their units become their primary (or only) source of income. They aim to operate an entire portfolio of dedicated short term rentals so they develop systems to automate as much as possible.
Full-Time Rentrepreneurs aim NOT to maximize the potential profit of each of their units, but instead to maximize the potential profit of each hour they spend on their hosting business. They are willing to pay to free up time so they can add more units to their Airbnb portfolio.

Wow, marvelous topic. Pretty cool to think of this topic in such a way. Taking on a persona as a host.
I love your website, thank you very much! I think another type, maybe rarer type, is the “hobbyist” – this is where I fall. I love AirBnB but am not seeking to make major profit, or consistent profit, I mean extra cash is always nice! But, rather b&bs, travel and cultural exchange are passions and I love that I get to work in that realm. I suspect there are more people like this out there! Or maybe this is peppered in the 3 main types regardless. Not sure what the strengths/weaknesses are. Perhaps more invested in the enjoyment of the experience for guests, but less invested in competitive pricing. Thoughts?
i would call myself a ‘STABLE EXTRA INCOME SEEKER’. I am a very people person who has a lovely spacious home with bedrooms running spare almost 9 out of 12 months.
I would be able to invest both time and effort in giving my guests memorable experiences
The Extra Stable Income Seeker best describes the kind of host I’ll be. Currently I am considering AIRBNB. I have a 2-bedroom condominium apt., but I don’t want to be a traditional landlord-tenant relationship as I know of some horror stories where the landlord has had difficulty collecting rent or evicting a non-paying tenant.
The stable income seeker.
You missed one. I don’t have a catchy name. (That’s your job, Mr. Blog Poster 🙂 ), but what about someone who’s in between the stable extra income seeker and the rentrepreneur. I’m looking to rent out full time, but not make a long-term career of it. I have a home that I want to rent full-time for a few years while my life situation is keeping me out of it. I never want to have more than one unit, and I want to minimize the time I spend managing my Airbnb listing while maximizing the profit on that listing. So what’s do you call the host whose in between those profiles, and more importantly, what advice do you have for that kind of host?
Rentrepreneur 100%.
I have a full time job, but would love to earn extra income from my spare bedroom. Stable Extra Income Seeker is what best describes me.
Hands down Rentrepreneur!!
